That four-step sequence — repeated dozens of times, across every shape, every colour, every session — is building the spatial reasoning, fine motor control, and logical thinking that your child will use for the rest of their life.
Perfect for: Ages 2 to 5

Why this toy
- 3D objects, not flat pieces. Unlike flat puzzle pieces, the peg board uses three-dimensional wooden pieces — cylinders, cubes, cones. Your child must manipulate a 3D object in space to find the correct hole. This is spatial reasoning at its most tangible.
- Self-correcting — the toy teaches itself. The wrong shape doesn't fit. There is no adult needed to say "wrong." The board gives immediate, honest feedback and your child learns to trust their own problem-solving.
- Colour sorting adds a second layer of challenge. Once your child masters shape fitting, they can sort by colour — grouping all the reds, all the blues, all the yellows. The same board, a deeper challenge, a more advanced skill.
- Built for little hands. The pieces are sized and weighted for toddler hands — easy to grip, satisfying to push, and smooth enough to handle without frustration.
At This Stage
Between ages two and five, the brain is in its most active period of spatial development. The ability to mentally rotate a three-dimensional object and match it to a corresponding hole is one of the earliest forms of abstract reasoning a child develops — and it is directly predictive of later mathematical ability. Every time your child picks up a cylindrical peg, turns it, and finds the round hole, they are exercising the spatial intelligence that underlies geometry, engineering, and scientific thinking.
The peg board takes this foundational challenge further than a standard flat shape sorter by using true 3D objects — pieces that must be understood in three dimensions, not two. This small difference creates a significantly richer cognitive challenge that is precisely matched to what the two-to-five-year-old brain is ready to work on.
How to Play
- Remove all the pegs and place them in front of your child.
- Invite them to find the correct hole for each peg.
- As they sort, name each shape and colour together.
- As confidence grows, challenge them to sort by colour only, or time how fast they can complete the board.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Wooden Peg Board BIS certified?
Yes. Like all Flourish toys, it carries BIS certification — India's highest toy safety standard — and is made from 100% natural wood with non-toxic, child-safe paint throughout.
What age is this suitable for?
Designed for ages 2 to 5. At 2, children explore by trial and error. By 3–4, they recognise shapes and sort deliberately. By 5, they can sort by colour and shape simultaneously — a genuine cognitive challenge for this age.
How is this different from the Four Column Shape Sorter?
The Peg Board uses true 3D objects — cylindrical, cubic, and conical pegs that must be understood in three dimensions. The Four Column Shape Sorter uses flat pieces sorted into columns. Both develop spatial reasoning, but the Peg Board adds the challenge of 3D object manipulation.
Can a 2-year-old use this independently?
Yes — the self-correcting design means the board gives its own feedback. Play alongside your child in early sessions to name shapes and colours, then step back as confidence builds.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking in water. The sealed, non-toxic finish is easy to clean and hygienic for daily use.
